Why are PAT tests important?

PAT tests are crucial as they ensure the safety of electrical equipment. PAT testing identifies dangerous faults, such as frayed cables, broken equipment, or hard-to-spot internal faults.

Many workplace accident claims are linked to electrical shocks or fires caused by faulty equipment. Injuries resulting from electrical faults can lead to costly and stressful claims.

Carrying out proper PAT testing is quick and straightforward, and it can help prevent accidents while saving you money on potential compensation claims.

Proper PAT management is key to upholding a safe workplace or property by catching faults early and reducing the risk of injury.

FAQs

Are PAT tests mandatory?

PAT testing isn’t a legal requirement; however, it is required by law that all electrical equipment must be safe to use.

Workplace electrical safety requirements are detailed under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which states that electrical equipment must be maintained so far as reasonably practicable to prevent danger.

In practice, PAT testing is the simplest, cheapest, and most effective way to prove you’re meeting those responsibilities and protecting people from risk.

PAT testing is a straightforward process that includes visual inspections and expert electrical testing.

Up first on the PAT testing checklist, we carry out checks for visible issues, such as damaged plugs or cables.

Then, we conduct electrical tests using specialist PAT testing equipment. Finally, we create a PAT test certificate for your records that covers our findings, recommendations, and fixes.

There is no correct answer as to how often you need a PAT test, as it depends on how often the equipment is used and the environment it’s in.

For example, a power tool used daily on a construction site will need more frequent testing than a monitor in an office.

As a general rule-of-thumb, most companies choose annual testing to stay on the safe side and ensure they are meeting safety requirements.

New appliances are usually safe to use straight away and don’t require immediate PAT testing.

That said, we would recommend visual checks when they arrive and including them in ongoing testing.

Yes, absolutely. Once testing is complete, you’ll receive a clear certificate showing what’s been tested, what’s passed or failed, and when the testing was carried out.

At P&B Electrical, we are here for our clients from start to finish, so if you ever have questions about the results, we’re always happy to talk them through.

If the appliance can be plugged in and moved, it’s typically considered a portable appliance.

Examples include everyday items such as kettles, computers, extension leads, power tools, and office equipment. If you’re unsure about a specific item, give P&B Electrical a call, and we can quickly advise.

PAT testing helps you meet your responsibilities under key UK safety legislation, including the Electricity at Work Regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The Health and Safety at Work Act clearly outlines portable appliance testing, whereas the Electricity at Work Regulations state the legal requirement for electrical appliances to be properly maintained.

It’s not about ticking a box, it’s about showing you’re taking electrical safety seriously.

Costs can vary depending on the number and type of appliances.

At P&B Electrical, we keep things transparent and cost-effective, and we’re always happy to provide a tailored quote based on your needs.

PAT tests do not have a fixed expiry date, but most businesses renew their PAT testing at least annually to keep everything up to date and compliant.

If an appliance fails, we will clearly highlight it as unsafe and record it in the appliance register. Failed appliances must be repaired, removed, or replaced to reduce the risk of hazards, like electric shocks or fires.
